What Is Tooth Extractions?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While we always explore every possible option to save a natural tooth, extractions are sometimes necessary due to severe infection, extensive decay, fracture, crowding, or impaction.
At Akaay Dental Care, we prioritise your comfort at every step. With precise anaesthesia technique and gentle instrumentation, most patients are surprised by how comfortable and quick the procedure actually is.
When Do You Need It?
Extraction is recommended when:
A tooth is severely decayed and cannot be saved with a filling or root canal
Advanced gum disease has caused significant bone loss around the tooth
A tooth is fractured below the gumline and cannot be restored
Impacted wisdom teeth are causing pain, infection, or overcrowding
Orthodontic treatment requires creating space in the jaw
A milk tooth is not shedding naturally to allow the permanent tooth to erupt
The Procedure - Step by Step
Clinical examination and X-rays confirm that extraction is the most appropriate treatment.
A topical numbing gel is applied to the gum before the injection to minimise discomfort.
Local anaesthesia is administered to completely numb the tooth, surrounding bone, and gum.
For a simple extraction: the tooth is gently loosened using a dental elevator and lifted out with forceps.
For a surgical extraction (impacted or broken tooth): a small incision is made, the tooth may be sectioned for easier removal, and stitches are placed if needed.
Gauze is placed over the socket to control bleeding; you bite down firmly for 20–30 minutes.
Post-extraction care instructions are given, along with prescriptions for pain relief and antibiotics if needed.
Benefits
Eliminates source of pain and infection immediately
Prevents spread of infection to adjacent teeth and jaw
Relieves discomfort caused by impacted wisdom teeth
Creates necessary space for orthodontic alignment
Quick recovery - most patients return to normal activity within 24–48 hours
Aftercare Tips
- Bite firmly on the gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after leaving the clinic.
- Do not rinse vigorously for 24 hours - this can dislodge the blood clot.
- Apply an ice pack to the cheek for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
- Eat soft foods (yogurt, dal, rice) for 3–5 days and avoid chewing on the extraction side.
- Take all prescribed medications on schedule.
- Do not smoke or consume alcohol for at least 48 hours.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water 3–4 times a day.
- Attend a follow-up appointment if sutures were placed or if swelling/pain worsens.
